About the project

The purpose of weed control work on vacant Crown land is to assist in meeting some of the goals of the Crown Managed Land Weed Management Strategy for the Department of Lands and Planning being:

  • To prevent new weed problems on Crown managed land.
  • Significantly reduce the impact of existing weed problems on Crown managed land while meeting statutory requirements.

The Weed's Management Act requires that all declared weeds area to be controlled in a manner that provides best practice management and optimum results.

Our weed management solution

Territory Weed Management have been successfully carrying out this contract since 2006. This contract, currently with a gross annual value of $650,000, comprises over 100 blocks/section of land in the Darwin, Palmerston, Darwin River, Adelaide River, Batchelor and Gunn Point region. Consequently there is a variety of terrain ranging from rock hill slopes to wetlands.

Although a wide variety of weeds occur on Crown land, the major weeds of concern are gamba grass, mission grass and mimosa pigra. All have a limited window of opportunity for control.

Territory Weed Management is geared to carry out this demanding contract through a range of application equipment and a range of 4WD vehicles, trucks and ATV’s to ensure herbicide application at the most optimum time.

Results

Since working on this contract there has been a marked reduction in the weed occurrence on vacant Crown Land with a corresponding reduction in fire hazard.
